Android 4 is Linux Checkmate
Summary: Linux is beating Microsoft and Apple, both on the technical side and the sales side
IN OUR latest batch of links we included quite a few stories about Android 4.0.x, which is deployed on phones that are better than Apple’s (and any other company’s line of products). Short of patent extortion, it seems unlikely that Apple and Microsoft can do anything about it now. In coming posts we are therefore going to track and tackle patent attacks on Android, which now involve lobbyists, fake ‘reports’, litigation (directly or through trolls), and AstroTurfing.
Before we proceed to some stories of interest (most likely tomorrow) we’ll leave readers with some links of interest:

Microsoft Windows Phone Sales Dismal in the First Year; Stock Awaits Earnings
It has been more than a year since Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) launched its new smartphone OS – Windows Phone 7. Sales of Windows Phone devices have been below expectations according to Steve Ballmer, but we didn’t have any concrete numbers until analysts recently revealed that Microsoft’s Windows Phone unit sales were around 1.4 million – much lower than competing platforms like Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android and Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS. In comparison, Google is seeing nearly 550 device activations worldwide per day while Apple saw more than a million iPhone 4S pre-orders on the very first day. Apple’s ‘Siri’ Means What in Japanese?
MSNBC gets credit, for rounding up some of the funnier bits, as does Gizmodo, which claims that within the country of Georgia, the term “siri” is common slang for a rather pornographical variation on “penis”.
This whole Siri hype is nonsensical because Android had that well over a year ago. Apple has truly become juvenile, aggressive, and arrogant. It is already making up excuses for not selling as many hypePhones as it hoped to sell and its phones are inferior on the hardware side (see the links posted earlier), which makes hypePhone the “Android for kids”. Linux is all grown up. █

Repeatedly Apple’s phones have been shown to have the highest user satisfaction ratings. This is *the* stat that is most important in deciding which is “best”.

Even if look at just voice technologies, Roy does nothing to try to show that this is as good in Android as it is in iOS. If you think there is such “documentation” then show it. Roy repeatedly makes the accusation. I have not seen him support it. Remember, Samsung keeps losing in the courts, I have shown multiple pieces of evidence showing their copying of Apple, etc.

While there might be some “Appel fanboys” like the ones you describe, the same can be said of “Linux cultists”. Here you are making a claim about Roy and an accusation against me but show no support. No, I do not believe Roy has ever shown such an “extortion racket”. Apple never sued anyone for “rounded corners”. This is simply a lie. Also remember that the fact Samsung has been copying Apple is very well supported. Here are some examples:

Additionally, multiple courts have sided with Apple – to the point that the Samsung copycat products have been banned from sale. Also keep in mind that Apple tried to keep this out of the courts – they contacted Samsung (Jobs directly, not some lawyer, if reports are to be believed).
Also note that the current Samsung products are *not* copying Apple’s looks (at least not as much – I have not seen the packaging, power supplies, etc.) and Apple has not lifted a finger against them. The narrative of Apple being the mean one, trying to stifle competition, is not supported by the evidence.

You are now changing the topic from one product being better than another (a subjective assessment) to specific, hand-picked hardware components you think are better in a product you want to support. This is utter FUD. What matters with a tool is how well it serves someone – how much it pleases them. The stats you list help to build a pleasing product, but they are not evidence of one product being better than another. If they were, a box of high end parts would be a great “phone”. This is clearly not the case. Silly, really.
The bottom line here is that Apple products repeatedly top customer satisfaction surveys. Users find the Apple products to be superior. Now this is not universal – and many find *for them* another company’s product to be better… I am certainly not suggesting that such surveys be the only criteria for an individual to decide what will serve them best. That would be daft. But when you talk “better” as an overall claim, those surveys are the best data we have.

Cool. As long as Samsung is selling products which are not a copy of Apple’s (or someone else’s) I am happy for them.
With the iPhone 4S doing so well it will be interesting to see how they each do. Also would be curious which phones – ones in the same class as Apple’s or low end ones? Either way, though, assuming these are non-copycat phones then kudos to Samsung.
Unlike Roy and, apparently, you I have no dog in this race. I am happy there is competition between Apple and Samsung and others – it pushes them all to be better. This is what *should* happen in a market. There will be winners and losers… I predict Apple will be one of the winners – as defined by having very happy customers and by making Apple a lot of money. But maybe not. So be it.
I also predict several hand set makers will outsell Apple over the next few years – Apple generally does not join the race to the bottom. Then again, Apple was talking about looking at sales of all cell phones, so maybe they will surprise me this time. They have in the past and with their change in management they likely will change their focus some. This is a good thing – you do not want to try to be someone you are not.
