Dice is Dicing Slashdot to Bits

Posted in Bill Gates, Deception, Microsoft at 11:22 am by Dr. Roy Schestowitz

Summary: Slashdot is being liquidated and the community of Slashdot threatens a boycott of the site

SELLING OUT IS VERY EASY. Earning status and maintaining one’s integrity in the face of temptation is hard. There are always some Sugar Daddies out there, looking to buy themselves positive coverage from seemingly credible sources that would otherwise criticise them. Examples from the UK include The ‘Guardian’ and BBC, both of which accepted a bribe from Bill Gates’ shell entity in an implicit exchange of favours (agenda-pushing for money).

A new report today reveals that The ‘Guardian’ opens its doors even further for the agenda of rich and powerful companies [1]. This trend not limited to such general news sites though; even technology sites go down the same route in pursuit of Sugar Daddies. A lot of them justify it by saying that reporting requires money, hence sellout as a business model is ‘just’.

Not too long ago we covered the mess which was going on at Slashdot and SourceForge, which turned into Microsoft and Bill Gates promotion tools. They even hired longtime Microsoft boosters and former Microsoft staff, just like the BBC had done.

Following the latest scandals at SourceForge [2,3] we had a lot of discussion about it in Techrights IRC (Slashdot managers even came to the channel in attempts to appease) and last week we got a lot of discussion about Dice driving Slashdot into its death with video ads, Microsoft agenda, etc. Slashdot without a community is a dead site because it derives its value from readers and their comments. Our readers who used to like Slashdot said that Dice was essentially liquidating the sites (squeezing the goose for golden eggs) by making the best moves to alienate the readers, i.e. annoy them in exchange for some money/a “quick buck”. Bruce Pernes, who has been very prolific in Slashdot, is saying now in Slashdot that he’s seriously thinking about bringing Technocrat back (Slashdot for grown-ups as he calls it). Last night we made significant changes in Tux Machines, adopting a more Slashdot-like style (in the format/layout sense). It is still the site to follow for very quick and high-quality selection of GNU/Linux and FOSS news — something which Techrights has not been doing as of late (news is not covered quickly enough anymore).

Related/contextual items from the news:

  1. Guardian’s seven-figure deal to build on ‘shared values’ & provide branded content 4 Unilever
  2. Has SourceForge been judged unfairly?

While it’s generally better not to judge too quickly, I think it’s reasonable that people are holding SourceForge to account for some of their decisions. People who download open source software do not expect to get other applications bundled with them.

  3. The Reddit – SourceForge Lynch Mob

It was like Cooks Source all over again, just without the catchphrase “But honestly Monica.”

It’s been all over the web for the last week or two that the photo imaging program GIMP, a FOSS crown jewel, has dropped SourceForge as a download site. Although the GIMP folks had been a little concerned over some advertisements on SourceForge, the real reason appears to be DevShare, which bundles third party offers with open source downloads for install on Windows machines.

    The boycott is announced here:

    http://slashcott.com/

Slashdot, although reduced in importance by astroturfing and Dice, is really about the only site left that has a decent comment system, allowing an active community. That’s only partially technical.

    Dr. Roy Schestowitz Reply:

What does its commenting system have that other (e.g. Drupal-based) sites do not have? Comment rating can be facilitated by modules.

    Needs Sunlight Reply:

It’s famous for having ratings of the ratings, also known as metamoderation. That usually helps extend the effect of the raters. Does Drupal have that capability? Either way, running an active comments site means having the resources and means for dealing with shills, troll, and astroturfers. PJ was pretty good about that but I think all that was done by herself.

    Dr. Roy Schestowitz Reply:

Comment deletion (also known as censorship) is not worth commending. it’s one of the things Groklaw did wrong and made the site a tad hypocritical on free speech.

What Else is New

  1. A System in Their Back Pockets: Protecting Large Corporations in High-Profile Patent Cases

A couple of new examples of patent cases where the bigger company (with deeper pockets) wins, either by injunctions against small companies or by invalidating the patents of smaller companies

  2. The European Patent Organisation's Administrative Council Helps Benoît Battistelli Destroy Patent Quality for the Sake of 'Production'

In secretive sessions behind closed doors Battistelli and the Administrative Council conspired to send the no-longer-independent boards of appeal to exile, assuring that patent quality will nosedive and make the Office akin to a registration/filing office

  3. At the European Patent Organisation the Administrative Council Does Not Care About Staff

The Administrative Council (AC) of the European Patent Organisation continues to show carelessness and apathy if not complicity by maintaining a deeply heartless approach and blind support for a President with 0% approval ratings (among polled staff)

  5. EPO Leak: Administrative Council's Latest Meeting Report (Updated)

The outcome of the Administrative Council's meeting, where Battistelli managed to avoid earthquakes and basically did just about everything he wanted, reinforcing the perception that there is no oversight

  6. Publicly-Available Information About the Meeting of the EPO's Administrative Council

The EPO "crisis" -- as Board 28 called it -- lingers on because no substantial steps were taken towards Battistelli's removal from Office for his violation of Office rules (his own rules) among other laws that Eponia perceives itself as exempt from

  7. Battistelli's Last Moves Are Desperate Attempts to Crush the Messenger (SUEPO), Which Will Almost Certainly Backfire on (if Not Fire) Battistelli

By implicitly declaring a war on those who speak truth to power or those who are associated with perceived truth-tellers, Battistelli reinforces the perception that he is protecting the bad people at all cost (even his very own career)

  8. EPO Staff Representative Jesus Areso Explains the Crisis to the Administrative Council

An intervention by an EPO Central Staff Committee (CSC) member who is under gag orders from Battistelli's regime and cannot speak about his case, which apparently involves truly severe disciplinary actions for merely helping or contributing to a staff survey (not controlled by and paid for by Battistelli)

  9. Shadows of Alleged Criminality Over the European Patent Office (EPO)

Cases against Željko Topić, a Vice-President at the European Patent Office, are moving forward in Croatia, where he still faces many criminal charges

  10. You Know That UPC is Quite Likely Dead (at Least in the UK) When Even Baroness Neville-Rolfe Dodges the Question (Updated)

The UPC appears to be a dead end, much like Battistelli's career, not only in the UK but in Europe as a whole (it has been all along designed with London/England/UK in mind)

  11. Short Report From Today's EPO Protest in Munich

A few noteworthy points about the staff protest which coincided with the Administrative Council's meeting earlier today in Munich

  12. Growing Consensus Even Among Patent Professionals That UPC is Dying Everywhere If Not Just in the UK

The UPC continues to sink as more and more people come to grips with the complexity of the current situation, irrespective of what countries other than the UK do next

  13. Battistelli Attacks Not Only His Staff But Also Patents Themselves (Their Quality) and the Legal Legitimacy Surrounding the EPO

Battistelli's EPO is having not only reputation problems but also staff retention problems, patent quality problems and problems pertaining to perception of fair trials or justice regarding patents

  14. Battistelli is Creating an Atmosphere of Terror at the EPO While Exploiting Terror Attacks to Garner Sympathy

"As if Laurent were a terrorist, the Office has imposed a house arrest and has forbidden him to enter the EPO premises," according to SUEPO, writing about one of its members at The Hague who is "maliciously accused via a fabricated procedure"

  15. Rumours That EPO President Battistelli Got Sacked to be Replaced by Christoph Ernst Appear to be Baseless

Dr. Christoph Ernst is claimed to be the successor (interim or permanent) of the notorious Battistelli, but these claims have little or no evidence to support them

  17. The EPO Has Become Battistelli's Circus and the Administrative Council Has Been Reduced to (Illegal) Circus Animals Controlled With 'Treats'

Battistelli's attack on justice and on the rule of law is debated among insiders who have grown increasingly impatient with the Administrative Council's tolerance of Battistelli and sometimes even Kongstad's amazing complicity

  18. The Latest Lies About the Unitary Patent (UPC) Would Have Us Believe That It's Alive and Well

How patents-centric sites (some of which are in bed with the EPO) have responded to the 'Brexit' vote and why they're not telling us the truth about the Unitary Patent scam (often created and promoted by the same people who run and/or fund such sites)

  19. EPO Management Bunker: “The Bailiff Who Came to Deliver the Subpoena was Escorted off the Property by Five Security Guards.”

Battistelli has essentially turned the European Patent Office (EPO) into a barracks, where he continues to enjoy immunity from the rule of law and discourages those who wish to challenge this immunity

Pensamientos acerca de lo que pasará al líderazgo de la EPO después de ‘Brexit’ (salida Británica de la EU), lo que sevéramente socava el proyecto más grande de Battistelli el que usaba habituálmente para justificar sus increíbles abusos

  29. [ES] El Caradura Benoît Battistelli Debería Renunciar a Luz de la Filtrada Nueva Decisión en Su Vendeta en Contra de un Juez que se Atrevió a Decir la Verdad (Actualizado)
