Federal News Network ☛ Civilians killed and wounded as Russian forces renew push to take towns in eastern Ukraine
Ukrainian officials say at least two civilians were killed and others wounded across Ukraine in the past 24 hours as Russian forces continued to shell areas across the country and pushed forward near an embattled eastern city. A 60-year-old man died on Friday evening as a Russian missile slammed into an unspecified industrial facility, while his wife was hospitalized with serious shrapnel wounds, a local mayor said. A person was killed and another wounded as Russian forces overnight launched “mass shelling” attacks on the frontline Kherson province in the south; another civilian suffered wounds as Russian forces shelled the embattled eastern city of Avdiivka. Analysts have noted a renewed Russian push near Adviivka that they say has secured minor gains.

Dennis Crouch/Patently-O ☛ Copyright-Free Sandbox: Implications of AI-Generated Content
Conventional wisdom in copyright law has been to presumptively treat all online content as protected by copyright. This approach has made sense because of the low originality standard for copyright protection. The result then has been that users would focus on whether they have a license; whether the intended use is a “fair use;” and (perhaps) whether the copyright holder is likely to discover the infringement and attempt to enforce their rights.

Roll over, foreground!
Hour until midnight with stray granola itching my mouth. The cello solo at the end of Decades, Castle Romeo by Slauson Malone 1 is bringing me to tears, it's so beautiful. How are you? Bartender, how are you? I'm here because it was payday today, and I'm procrastinating, a little eager and additionally desperate, all puckish and bashful slinging between my accomplishments, my crushes, my conference rooms, my tests, my gallery volunteer shifts I spend sitting exhausted because that's what galleries do. Is your job any good? I don't drink. I don't know if I can ever understand you, bartender, where you're coming from. But between the two us there'll always be the night-time state the Greek mystery cults hunted for, long ago.

Read this from git
You can now read Laniakea offline through git, or download daily-updated Markdown summaries.
I got inspired by an article by Solderpunk to provide my blog articles as easily distributable offline copy through git. Solderpunks article goes conceptually further than I do with my implementation. Nonetheless this was a satisfying experiment.

SonicPi compositions over Gemini?
Any SonicPi users on here? Seems to me that Gemini is the perfect place to share text based compositions... I myself am very bad at it, so I won't inflict my noob experiments on you guys, but I'm sure the broader community would love to see some of your compositions... And maybe some Geminauts will be hearing about SonicPi for the first time on here... I think it deserves its own subspace.

Orca and Sunvox
Sonic Pi is a program that allows you to “program” music, quite literally. It is one of several environments that form the “live-coding music” subspace. All of these environments allow the code to be tweaked while the song is playing, allowing for a performative element. There are even algo-raves. I mean of course there are.

Run your own Syncthing discovery server on OpenBSD
In a previous article, I covered the software Syncthing and mentioned a specific feature named "discovery server".
The discovery server is used to either relay data between clients or to connect each other through NATs.
A motivation to run your own discovery server(s) would be for security, privacy or performance reasons.

How I remember Orbital Fox's mailing list
I was a subscriber to the Gemini mailing list hosted by Orbital Fox, and the way I remember it is, “well, it wasn't Nirvana, but I suffered much worse”. I arrived relatively late, right after having heard of Gemini in, of all places, YouTube. At that time SolderPunk didn't show up all that often, and I relied on reading the archives to get a sense of what was going on. I failed to detect any obvious trolls, though I did see some very opinionated people, skeptics, and people who insisted on their own opinions; which is fair by my standards. Still, I learned quite a bit from the interactions, even in cases when they weren't, let's say perfect, simply because most of the participants know much more than me. That said, most of the time, most people were generally helpful and kind. Granted, personal memories are a personal thing, and I've been wrong before.

Gemini as a community, today, by Yretek
This thing on the crossroads between Gemini and Community have sparked some interest. The reason might lay in that we're searching some form of community, since we realized the «big bad Web» will not deliver their promises. I've written, and I'll write it again that I don't think a protocol cannot be a community. However, it can be the infraestructure for some form of communities, if only we build them.

WordPress Now Supports the ActivityPub Protocol
For years a lot of us have been lamenting the death of RSS and the blogosphere. The web changed, and how we used it changed; for a lot of people, a curated list of bookmarks and a daily feed gave way to social media and relinquishing control over what we see. This was an enormous change: remember when Yahoo! was an enormous portal, constantly updated? We can try to influence the way social media presents Stuff to us - follow certain people, certain topics, etc - but algorithmic feeds in the big, corporate social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) by default are driven by engagement maximization metrics, to the detriment of, well, everything. You gets what you gets.
