What Richard Stallman (RMS) Thinks of Paying With Cash or 'Cashless Society'
"Don't be tracked, Pay Cash"
THE old "cash debate" that's focused around human rights (such as bank access and privacy) is hardly new to RMS. He spoke about this for 2 decades if not longer. 3+ years ago he talked about cash and Monero (shortly before the second campaign of defamation seeking to remove him from the FSF Board and more, whereupon he kept a lower profile) and 3 years earlier he said: "Black cabs demonstrate that a system for hiring cars with drivers does not need to identify passengers. Therefore such systems should not be allowed to identify passengers; they should be required to accept privacy-respecting cash from passengers without ever trying to identify them."
In a more recent interview (last year) RMS said: "I object to being required to identify myself to get a ride. With a taxi, I don’t have to. Because I’m going to pay cash. Uber won’t accept cash. I say any business that won’t let you pay cash, unless it’s for something very expensive like buying a house or a car, it’s an injustice."
His views and analogies hardly changed over time. That is actually a strength. █
