In Web Servers, Microsoft Continues Losing Relative Market Share (and the Web's Decline Continues)
Gone (or going) are these cash cows
THE latest Web Server Survey (first for 2024) is now out and it says that in "the January 2024 survey we received responses from 1,079,154,539 sites across 270,447,456 domains and 12,337,710 web-facing computers. This reflects a loss of 8.9 million sites, a gain of 1.2 million domains, and a loss of 17,900 web-facing computers."
So the Web continues getting smaller. Here is their latest graph:
Pay attention to Microsoft, going down by a lot for the month, not the year:
At this pace of monthly decline it can go below 4% by the end of the year.
Also this:
So over 10,000 Windows (or Microsoft) servers were switched off, as a net loss, perhaps converted to GNU/Linux. It should be noted that more physical machines are needed to run Microsoft things, so the above sort of overlooks the fact that Microsoft's "real" share in Web servers is only about 2% and declining. It is important to communicate this to others, even if it seems obvious to oneself, demonstrating that Microsoft is losing share all across the board in virtually every sector. The media helps Microsoft lie or distract with a bunch of vapourware, whose capacity is fictional or only induces heavy losses. We estimate that Microsoft shed off about 30,000 workers last year alone (including the contractors and perma-temps). █
