Wikileaks Actually Helped Save the Planet
THE last news item or entry from Wikileaks was 3 years ago ("Julian Assange and COP26"). The latest leak is older than that. It said that "Julian Assange faces a 175 year prison sentence in the United States for publishing documents, including those which exposed wilful, or otherwise reckless, sabotage of climate action during prior climate change summits."
It took note of "full-frontal assault on the freedom of the press and the public’s right to know" and remember that Assange was forced to take a charter flight rather than share planes with other people. That's a full-frontal assault on the environment. What did they think he would do in the airports, run away? He was already assured that he would arrive safety at Australia.
I'm "old enough to remember"TM climate-related leaks from Wikileaks as well as writings on the topic. For that, Wikileaks deserves to be seen as a public service. Too much of today's (remaining) media is sponsored by oil companies for its energy-themed articles. Without leaks, we'd not see the coordination of climate science deniers.
We need leaks, we need whistelowers. For that, we need publishers that can protect sources and resist censorship. █
