Doing the Mending
One of the bits of advice that Julia Cameron gives in The Artists Way is to "do the mending" -- that is, literally do the mending that needs to be done (sewing up holes in clothes, loose threads in blankets, etc) -- or to take and do what she calls "artist brain activities" -- things that require little mind but allow for the subconscious to process all what it needs to process. Think doing the dishes, taking a shower, taking out the garbage, these sorts of things. These sorts of things are what help us to clear our internal blocks and move forward with what's needed. This works in tangent with the advice that I like from Dr. Gladys McGarey's book "The Well-Lived Life" that focuses on allowing for movement even when it feels like you can't move at all. I'm not saying that this advice is necessarily the golden standard for all of your needs, but I've found it helpful as tools to help me manage my own mental health and keep moving even when I feel emotionally paralyzed.

Degoogling, Passwords, Misfin, Ham Radio, Haligmonath - ROOPHLOCH 2024
I decided to participate in ROOPHLOCH this year. While writing this post, I'm currently sitting outside of a bar in my town having a beer. The point of ROOPHLOCH (Remote Outdoor Off-grid PHlogging CHallenge) is essentially to write a post off-grid, using battery power and being outdoors. Info about ROOPHLOCH can be found at the gemini link below by solderpunk. For those viewing the web version of my post here, the link below requires a gemini client to open and almost certainly won't open up in whatever web browser you are using to see this post.

Scattering Like Dust On The Wind
After putting out music under the name K LeStray for the past few years I feel like it's time to move on? I still want to make music but I don't think I like where K LeStray has been heading?
It leaves me with a problem though... how do I end it, quietly or with a bang, what do I do after, how do I move on from it to start something new? Do I leave the music up? (the preservationist in me says absolutely yes)

Rock harvesting
Today I lost count of how many rocks I dug out. I got the biggest one so far, it took me a good while and no small effort to take it out of the hole I've been digging. I am almost done with that job. Soon, I'll be able to move on to more interesting matters. Not that digging a hole isn't interesting, but it's going to be filled again and covered, so...

Energy Requirement for Large Language Models and What is the Next Step for the LLMs ?
Growth in the LLMs is very rapid. Training of such large models is only possible for the big corporations. The amount of energy required for such training is so huge that it can be equivalent to electricity consumption of a major city for a month. In order to advance these models further, even larger infrasture will be used. Is there any way of reducing this energy requirement ? May be using existing LLMs to build the next generation LLMs ? In any case, what will be the capabilities of next generation LLMs?

ROOPHLOCH 2024: Radios and modems and serial, oh my!
Every year I've seen it, I always end up forgetting about ROOPHLOCH or not having any decent ideas for it, but this year I had a decent idea and I'm getting started early in the month!

What to expect from this gemlog
Retro computing is among my dozens (probably) of competing hobby interests. I got my first vintage computer (the TI-99/4a) in 2018 (I think) and have had some bursts of interest since then. I believe I'm writing to you in the midst of the third such burst.
You can expect to read updates on my various retro computing projects here, but years may pass between such updates.
