More Love, Less Greed
The Free software movement is inherently about sharing
Now that UNIX is 55 (it can retire early if so it wishes) its legacy remains very much alive, but its co-creator said last year that "even though I've invested a zillion years in Apple, I'm throwing it away, and I'm going to Linux..." (Debian GNU/Linux)
What's so special about GNU? The licence, the GPL.
At the core of the Free software movement, which sought to preserve sharing of code (hitherto the norm), was the concept of copyleft. I give you, you give me back. It is a form of mutual and collective solidarity. If everyone has an obligation to reciprocate or share with the neighbour, then we maximise sharing in general.
Some people want to hoard, to privatise, to exclude. Those are the people who typically attack the persons behind the GPL and GNU. They try to leverage anything they can to portray those people as violent monsters/mobsters, but the claims don't add up. The facts don't match.
The Free software movement needs trust, love, and respect; believing people who lie to you is the path towards hate. █
