Cindy Cohn Leaving the Electronic Frontier Foundation While Its Co-founder John Gilmore, Whom She Apparently Helped Oust, Will Celebrate 40 Years of the Free Software Foundation, Inc.
EFF has been busy hoarding GAFAM money, whereas the latter is where all the real activism is done (the EFF is funded by billionaires, the FSF isn't)
According to the official page, the Free Software Foundation (FSF) has 10 staff members and 10 voting members: Alexandre Oliva, Christina Haralanova, Geoffrey Knauth, Gerald Jay Sussman, Henry Poole, Ian Kelling, John Gilmore, Maria Chiara Pievatolo, Odile Bénassy, and Richard M. Stallman.
Mr. Oliva will probably become a full board member (again) some time soon [1, 2].
John Gilmore (or "gnu" being his username per se) is well known for his work at the EFF, which he co-founded. The current head of the EFF, who apparently played a role in pushing him out, is leaving (just over a month after The Register MS interviewed its chief regarding EFF@35 it revealed that she was leaving; funny that). As a reminder, from 2021:
John Gilmore has since then moved to a better, more principled place.
Very soon the FSF will turn 40:
18 days more.
This page was updated 22 hours ago and it is wrong:
Stallman started GNU in 1983, not the FSF. He merely announced GNU in 1983, a lot of the practical work began a year later.
Anyway, we're cautiously optimistic about changes at the EFF. When Cory Doctorow was asked whether he'd like to take the lead (now that the position is vacant) he said he wasn't interested. Maybe he knows something we don't.
We'll be covering some EFF scandals next year; they relate to how the EFF handled the SLAPPs against us [1, 2, 3]. █
