Bonum Certa Men Certa

Microsoft Is Not Out the Equation

Earlier today, my co-editor has been accused, however gently, by a commenter. A reader argues that the blog ought to cover no news about Microsoft. Shane's reply to this observation was simple: "I fail to see the distinction between Microsoft and Novell any longer".

I would like to take a moment and use a few shocking quotes in order to remind everyone why Microsoft cannot be altogether ignored in discussions about GNU/Linux. Those who refuse to learn from history are likely to have it repeated.

Badvista Isn't That Bad For The Community

Microsoft continuously floods the media with negative campaigns against FOSS, especially Linux. With Microsoft spreading FUD left and right I see no reason for the FSF to play nice. If Microsoft wants a war I think they should get one.

I would also like to remind you, the reader, of Microsoft stance in these issues.

'I'm thinking of hitting the OEMs harder than in the past with anti-Linux. ... they should do a delicate dance," Kempin wrote to Ballmer, in what is sure to be a memorable addition to the phrases ("knife the baby", "cut off the air supply") with which Microsoft enriched the English language in the first trial. Unlike those two, this is not contested...'

Allchin: "We need to slaughter Novell before they get stronger....If you're going to kill someone, there isn't much reason to get all worked up about it and angry. You just pull the trigger. Any discussions beforehand are a waste of time. We need to smile at Novell while we pull the trigger."

"According to the Declaration, Richard Emerson was not the only Microsoft employee Goldfarb was dealing with in connection with the BayStar investment in SCO. He mentions by name two others, from two other departments."

We are hoping to have an interview with Jeremy Allison shortly. Stay tuned.
