Rememeber who owns almost all of VMWare: EMC, from whom this latest move came.

What we did not mention the other day is that the current (now former) CEO was actually thrown out, despite the fact that she has been there since day one... and until the hugely-successful IPO. Diane Greene became a threat to Microsoft, being the Linux enabler that her company had evolved to be.

“Wait and watch how VMWare deemphasises Linux over time, letting just KVM compete with the 'Big Boys'.”Remember the story about Citrix, Microsoft's Partner of the Year also in June 2008. Citrix grabbed Xen, which Red Hat, Ubuntu and many other GNU/Linux vendors depended on. XenSource too had gained Microsoft insiders prior to the deal and it even moved to Redmond [1, 2, 3].

Watch and learn how Microsoft interferes with or 'hijacks' its competitors, including Novell and Corel. Novell has already agreed, as part of its deal with Microsoft, to be a slave (guest) on Windows hosts in the datacentre.

Where are the regulators? Is this competition? It's more like market perversion. Wait and watch how VMWare deemphasises Linux over time, letting just KVM compete with the 'Big Boys'. It's another Xen shuffle. All over again. ⬆

This is why you can't trust proprietary software. It is delivered as is and the future of the package depends on the whims of the ones shuffling the money...

This sounds a lot more like paranoia than well founded concern.

Is your logic that EMC (which is primarily a storage vendor) is going to dilute the value of VMware because they are Microsoft's 2008 Partner of the Year?

Or is it you think an ex-Microsoft employee (who just happens to have experience in developing an marketing one of the most successful operating systems of all time: Windows NT) is going to somehow make VMware more "Microsoft-centric" because of his heritage (vs. his paycheck).

I love the FOSS madness sometimes. Everyone celebrates these FOSS initiatives (Xen, SUSE) until a company finds a way to commercialize them (Citrix, Novell) and all the sudden those same products become evil. And God-forbid any company should have anything to do with the ultimate-evil, Microsoft. Then you shall certainly be banished to blog flame hell.

Here's an idea how about we let EMC run VMware they think is most profitable, and if we don't like it - we don't buy it. That's easy...

It's possible that this could become a problem. On the other hand, Linux generates an awful lot of revenue for VMware. It would be tough for VMware to walk away from all that money.
