Summary: Australian shops are unable to process payments because the whole system runs Windows and there is a daylight savings shutdown
David Williams says that "NAB [National Australia Bank] has daylight savings shutdown". According to his report, "the entire NAB€ systems – card transactions, Internet and telephone banking – were down.€ The reason the operator gave was that they were down deliberately “for€ daylight savings.”"
According to
this older report, "National Australia Bank is overhauling its network of 1600 ATMs to run on€ Windows XP and use IP networks." They also use
Windows on the desktop and
the server.
We previously wrote about Microsoft's daylight savings errors in
this post. It's a known problem and Microsoft is unable to cope with DST properly.
