Complaints About Perverted EIF Continue to Pile Up

Posted in Europe, Free/Libre Software, FUD, GNU/Linux, Interoperability, Microsoft at 6:42 am by Dr. Roy Schestowitz

Flags and signs

Summary: The European Interoperability Framework (EIF) draws more complaints, the European Interoperability Strategy (EIS) is coming, and Microsoft allies in Europe are smearing Free software

AS we demonstrated before, the EIF had been subverted after lobbying from many parties that include Microsoft lobbyists (and close allies like SAP), namely CompTIA, BSA, and ACT [1, 2, 3]. See for example:

  1. European Interoperability Framework (EIF) Corrupted by Microsoft et al, Its Lobbyists
  2. Orwellian EIF, Fake Open Source, and Security Implications
  3. No Sense of Shame Left at Microsoft
  4. Lobbying Leads to Protest — the FFII and the FSFE Rise in Opposition to Subverted EIF
  5. IBM and Open Forum Europe Address European Interoperability Framework (EIF) Fiasco
  6. EIF Scrutinised, ODF Evolves, and Microsoft’s OOXML “Lies” Lead to Backlash from Danish Standards Committee

There are more new complaints about this, one of which comes from OW2.

This open letter is to inform European Commission, IDABC and all related European MPs about the risk that may occur in case of a vague definition of Open Standards for a consortium of Industry and Academic players as such as OW2.

The person who originally pointed out a subversion of the document was Glyn Moody, who now writes about the European Interoperability Strategy (EIS).

The European Interoperability Strategy (EIS) is an initiative of the IDABC programme that aims to provide direction and to prioritise the undertaking of actions to achieve improved interaction, information exchange and cooperation among public administrations across borders and sectors for the years 2010-2015.

That too is likely to be (or have been) subjected to lobbying, just like the ESS (European Software Strategy) which we wrote about in:

  1. European Open Source Software Workgroup a Total Scam: Hijacked and Subverted by Microsoft et al
  2. Microsoft’s AstroTurfing, Twitter, Waggener Edstrom, and Jonathan Zuck
  3. Does the European Commission Harbour a Destruction of Free/Open Source Software Workgroup?
  4. The Illusion of Transparency at the European Parliament/Commission (on Microsoft)
  5. 2 Months and No Disclosure from the European Parliament
  6. After 3 Months, Europe Lets Microsoft-Influenced EU Panel be Seen
  7. Formal Complaint Against European Commission for Harbouring Microsoft Lobbyists
  8. ‘European’ Software Strategy Published, Written by Lobbyists and Multinationals
  9. Microsoft Uses Inside Influence to Grab Control, Redefine “Open Source”
  10. With Friends Like These, Who Needs Microsoft?

There are other interesting developments in Europe. Over the weekend we showed that a European Commission vice president who is close to Microsoft is now smearing Free software. The guy who covered this has accumulated similar smears from GE, whose FUD is weak because GE is internally a user of Free software and GNU/Linux (on the desktop, not just the server). Andrew Donoghue summarises these two reports and correctly adds:

Gyorgy’s comments may surprise some other parts of the company, as GE has been reported to be a user of JBoss open source middleware and other open source applications. GE Healthcare has also been a user of the open source Linux operating system since as far back as 2007 for seemingly critical applications.

So GE does not follow its very own advice. Just like Microsoft, GE uses GNU/Linux internally [1, 2, 3] but to the outside world it pretends that Free software is not suitable for use. “Do as I say, not as I do.”

  1. [Meme] Calle Calling...

The values of the Habermasian EPO judge depend on who’s paying the salary

  2. The EPO's War on Justice and Assault on the Law -- Part 6: The Habermasian Who Warned About “Legal Anarchy”

The political orientation of a Benoît Battistelli-appointed EPO judge who has the audacity to talk about legal anarchy and bemoan abuse of the law; the António Campinos administration extended his term until (at least) 2027

  3. Paid-for Plugs and Coordinated Marketing Fluff (PR Campaigns) Are Ruining 'Linux' Sites

Junk 'articles' (just marketing disguised as 'news') spoil the World Wide Web; companies repeat the same sales pitch over and over again, sometimes leveraging what they perceive to be avenues read by geeks

Freenode may seem like a negligible corner of the Internet, which media never bothers mentioning at all; but Freenode, which many have come to take for granted, is core infrastructure for many Free software projects and protecting the network is essential for the Free Software Movement

There is a conflict going on behind the scenes at Freenode, but there are also sincere and well-meaning attempts to undo the damage and get back to normal

  10. [Meme] Judges the Office Cannot Control Are Just Nazis With Weapons in Their Office...

The EPO hasn’t been run by grown-ups for over ten years; Benoît Battistelli, António Campinos and their confidants cannot grasp the concept of law, just blind loyalty

  11. The EPO's War on Justice and Assault on the Law -- Part 5: Battistelli's “Swedish Chef”

The EPO's 'courts' are controlled by the people whom they're supposed to judge on; this has been the case for at least half a decade

  15. The EPO's War on Justice and Assault on the Law -- Part 4: The President of the Boards of Appeal

A deeper look into the ‘sausage factory’ that is EPO tribunals certainly helps us understand the inherent bias of many decisions, including a recent decision on European software patents like a controversial simulation patent

  16. Judging the Judges

Today we shall take a closer look at Carl Josefsson, a person who shall become a figure of interest if he sends EPO courts to the United States in clear violation of the EPC (looking to rubber-stamp an unlawful decision already made before this case even started)

  17. When EU Authorities Tell You to Complain to the EPO Itself About EPO Privacy Violations...

“Kafkaesque” at the EPO; Kafka could do a whole novel about the flirtations with or affairs of ‘justice’ at the EPO

  18. The Need for Reliable Governance at Freenode

Why the current and high-profile (albeit somewhat covert) owner of the network, who seems to care about Free software (it has made him very wealthy), should put the whole thing in reliable hands and not attempt to 'monetise' it in any way

  21. [Meme] eBPF is Not Microsoft's, But It's Certainly Googlebombed by Microsoft

eBPF isn't Microsoft's. But sites that work closely with Microsoft keep mentioning that term as if Microsoft created it and champions it (typical tactics).

  26. IBM is Destroying Red Hat, Squeezing Red Hat's Work for Cash, Laying Off Staff, and Asking Staff to Resign

Layoffs are not a new thing at IBM (hardly so in the past couple of decades or more), but they're oversensitive about the Red Hat agenda

  27. [Meme] Longing for the Original IP Kat...

It would be nice to see more posts critical of injustice at the EPO, as we've just noted

  28. The EPO's War on Justice and Assault on the Law -- Part 2: Just Another Pro Forma Rubber-Stamping Exercise?

Half a decade after Benoît Battistelli ‘kidnapped’ and then defamed judges (it started in 2014) António Campinos has done nothing to restore lawfulness at the EPO, as controversial referral case G 1/21 shows; in fact, they recently approved European software patents after pressure from Campinos himself
