ChromeOS Isn't Freedom, But It's Killing Microsoft's Ability to Profit From Windows
ChromeOS has shot up to 22% in Sweden:
Linus Torvalds is a Finn who sometimes speaks Swedish (many Finns can). He's also a naturalised American. ChromeOS, which is based on Gentoo (made by a Canadian, Daniel Robbins), uses both GNU (made in USA) and Linux (Finnish in origin). Google wants to sort of merge it with - or fold it onto - Android.
As we said here many times before, ChromeOS absolutely doesn't mean freedom. In a lot of ways it's akin to Apple's and Microsoft's spyware-as-an-OS, except its upstream components are Free. Think of how Apple uses UNIX. Or even how Microsoft offloads some components of Windows to GitHub (proprietary) for openwashing.
When ChromeOS gets submerged onto Android (technical details unclear at this point; the press reports are partly speculative) expect ChromeOS to be even more freedom-hostile.
Nevertheless, seeing some countries where ChromeOS caught on is nice because it means Microsoft must lower the price of Windows and thus lose a lot in revenues. Expect Microsoft layoffs every month next year (just like this year). █
