The GNU Core Utilities or coreutils is a package of GNU software containing implementations for many of the basic tools, such as cat, ls, and rm, which are used on Unix-like operating systems.
Every day, we use many command-line tools to manage our systems, and perform basic tasks. Many of the programs provided by coreutils are staples in our daily life. Over the years, these tools have been updated and ported to other systems, but they still retain many of their original traits.
cut is one of the many utilities included with coreutils. cut writes to standard output selected parts of each line of each input file, or standard input. This lets us extract elements by defining ranges, delimiting characters and bytes. It’s not as widely known as some of its counterparts but it can still be a useful and practical command-line utility. cut doesn’t offer sophisticated field processing, like reordering fields, and handling fields aligned with blank characters.
Various people, us included, periodically have the need to securely dispose of disk drives that we no longer need or want, where by 'securely' we mean that people shouldn't be able to get our data from the drives after we've gotten rid of them. Often there are questions of what you need or what to be doing in order to achieve this security. In my view, part of the answer to this is depends on who you want to stop from getting your data (and how many resources you think they have).

Last weekend I attended an OSM hack weekend, hosted by Geofabrik in Karlsruhe, to progress some OSM-related topics around KDE Itinerary and to better connect KDE and OSM.
Platform section highlighting
The most visible result is that our train station map can now also highlight relevant platform sections, at least when platform sections are mapped in OSM. That’s rare in Germany at least, with Karlsruhe being one of the few exceptions, and thus providing the perfect opportunity for real-life testing.
I posted to the forum about changing the name of "EasyOS" and "Easy" to something else, such as "WaryOS" and "Wary":
https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?p=83290#p83290
There is fundamental problem with implementing that though, as the text "EasyOS" and "Easy" is hard-coded in woofQ, right from creation of EasyOS in early 2017.
I thought about replacing all occurrences of those text strings with variables, and wherever there is $(gettext " ... EasyOS ...") replace with something like $(eval_gettext " ... \${NEWDISTRONAME} ...")
However, that is very complicated to implement, a huge amount of work and likelihood of something going wrong.
Some notes on OpenBSD 7.2 on a Thinkpad X201
It has been a while since I had a laptop running OpenBSD.
Recently I bought a refurbished Thinkpad X201, so this was a great occasion to put OpenBSD on it.
Of course, installing OpenBSD on a Thinkpad is not difficult.
You need to install OpenBSD with an ethernet cable attached, in order to be able to run fwupdate. This installs firmware for the wifi card. After that, wifi works fine.
Lenovo Thinkpad X201
The X201 is a machine from 2010, and one of the last Thinkpad X-models with a classical keyboard. And like all Thinkpads, it has a great TrackPoint.
Some specs of the refurbished laptop I bought:
- Intel Core i5 M 520 CPU
- 4 GB DDR3 RAM 2Rx8
- 1200x800 display resolution
- 128 Gb SSD (SAMSUNG MZ7LN128)

Custom semiconductor chips are generally big projects made by big companies with big budgets. Thanks to Tiny Tapeout, students, hobbyists, or anyone else can quickly get their designs onto an actual fabricated chip. [Matt Venn] has announced the opening of a third round of the Tiny Tapeout project for March 2023.
There’s quite a few devices on the market that contain a Raspberry Pi as their core, and after becoming a proud owner of a solar roof, [Paolo Bonzini] has found himself with an Entrade ENR-DTLA04DN datalogger which – let’s just say, it had some of the signs, and at FOSDEM 2023, he told us all about it. Installed under the promise of local-only logging, the datalogger gave away its nature with a Raspberry Pi logo-emblazoned power brick, a spec sheet identical to that of a Pi 3, and a MAC address belonging to the Raspberry Pi Foundation. That spec sheet also mentioned a MicroSD card – which eventually died, prompting [Paolo] to take the cover off. He dumped the faulty SD card, then replaced it – and put his own SSH keys on the device while at it.

In case you have wondered how to back up a MySQL database using Java code, here is one way to do it: This program uses the mysqldump command to create a backup of a MySQL database, and saves the backup to a specified directory with a timestamped filename.
Console programs in Java can be easily written using System.out.println for output and Scanner for input.
Writing clean, easy-to-read code in Java is important for improving code readability, maintainability, and overall quality. Here are some tips for writing clean, unobfuscated code in Java: Here is an example: This class represents a person and contains two private fields: name and age.
To some people obfuscating programming code, including Java, means: Of course, obfuscating code is a terrible idea and usually means exactly the opposite to the above bullets, i.e. that the person who wrote it is easily replaceable and far from smart.
We always like when a designer does something different. After all, it is easy just to do what everyone else is doing. But to see things a different way is always interesting to us. When you think of a battle bot, you probably think of a robot with wheels or tracks, attacking other robots in an arena. But [Shea Waffles Johns] created Big Cookie, a combat bot with no wheels. Instead, it is a spinning wheel of death that moves relatively slowly. The robot makes up for that by having a mini-robot helper that brings Big Cookie its prey.
Inspired by the idea of creating a maskless lithography system using a digital micromirror device (DMD), [Nemo Andrea] tore into an Anycubic Photon Ultra, DLP & resin-based 3D printer to take a look at its projector system. Here Anycubic isn’t the maker of what is called the ‘optical engine’, which would be eViewTek’s D2 projector and its siblings. This projector assembly itself is based around the Ti DLP300s, which we covered a while back when it was brand new. Since that time Anycubic has released the Photon Ultra and Photon D2 3D printers based around these optical engines.

I have to admit, I once was addicted to my smartphone. I would end days with a screen on time in the double digits. That is wild, having your screen’s phone on for 10 hours a day.
Maybe if we all got a little training as teenagers we would be able to responsibly use these phones of ours. If the reality is that we will have to learn at some point, why not just add smartphone etiquette to the school curriculum?
[Proper Printing] is at it again. He’s trying to perfect his hybrid printer that works like an FDM printer but uses UV-curable resin gel instead of filament. It has been a recurring feature of consumer audio gear since the first magic eye tube blinked into life, to have some kind of visualization of the sound being played. Most recently this has meant an LED array or an OLED screen, but [Thomas] has gone one better than this with a CRT television converted to perform as a rudimentary oscilloscope.

In a major study, a new kind of cholesterol-lowering drug helped people who can’t take the first choice, pills called statins. Researchers tested the drug Nexletol in those hard-to-treat people and found it reduces the risk of heart attacks and other cholesterol-caused problems. Doctors already prescribe the drug together with a statin for certain high-risk patients. But people who can't or won't take statins because they sometimes cause muscle pain have limited alternatives. The research was published Saturday in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented at a meeting of the American College of Cardiology.
This blog post and OpenAI's recent actions—all happening at the peak of the ChatGPT hype cycle—is a reminder of how much OpenAI's tone and mission have changed from its founding, when it was exclusively a nonprofit. While the firm has always looked toward a future where AGI exists, it was founded on commitments including not seeking profits and even freely sharing code it develops, which today are nowhere to be seen.
Hartford is getting $2 million in federal funding from the Department of Justice to reduce violence in the community, and Mayor Luke Bronin is using nearly a quarter of that money to virtually connect residents with the police department.

The Biden administration said it would require states to report on cybersecurity threats in their audits of public water systems, a day after it released a broader plan to protect critical infrastructure against cyberattacks.
Cell-site simulators (CSS), also known as Stingrays or IMSI Catchers, are devices that serve as decoy cell towers. They're used by law enforcement, intelligence services, and others to intercept metadata or communications, and triangulate a phone's location. Essentially, your handset connects to the nearby tower, think it belongs to a telco, but in fact, it's a temporary mast set up by the Feds to snoop on devices within range.
A local source from Lhasa speaking on the condition of anonymity noted that the establishment of a data center could lead to “more scrutiny and enhanced monitoring of Tibetans leading to further infringement of their freedom of expression and enforcing greater self-censorship. “Such sentiments find validation in Beijing’s drive to collect mass DNA samples from Tibetans without their consent. Emile Dirks, apost doctoral fellow at Citizen Lab estimates that between June 2016 and July 2022, police may have collected up to 1,206,962 DNA samples from Tibetans, representing up to one-third (32.9%) of what China calls Tibet Autonomous Region’s total population of 3.66 million.

We have seen much recently about the Ukraine war anniversary. But this is also the anniversary of other wars: March marks the 8th anniversary of the war on Yemen and the 20th on Iraq. Members of Congress, including Senator Bernie Sanders, should introduce a Yemen War Powers Resolution before this war enters a 9th year.

Ja Morant will be away from the Memphis Grizzlies for at least their next two games and is promising to get help after livestreaming himself holding what appeared to be a gun at a nightclub. The team announced his absence shortly after the NBA said it opened an investigation into Morant's social media post early Saturday. The league could fine or suspend him if it finds wrongdoing. Morant said in a statement that he takes “full responsibility” for his actions and that he's taking "some time away to get help.” He didn't specify what kind.
The age-old MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) has been around since World War II, and one nonprofit organization representing the renowned Scout Snipers is calling the Corps move “misguided” and “ill-advised.”
Intellectually, we all know that we exist in a complex soup of RF energy. Cellular, WiFi, TV, public service radio, radar, ISM-band transmissions from everything from thermometers to garage door openers — it’s all around us. It would be great to see these transmissions, but alas, most of us don’t come from the factory with the correct equipment.
There might have been more.
Companies are trying to maintain fat profits as the economy changes, making “premiumization” their new favorite buzzword.
Part-time work is on the rise in the U.S. — and far more people are working less by choice than by obligation.
Why it matters: It’s one more sign of a new attitude toward work.
For nearly two decades, major corporations have touted principles known as E.S.G. (short for environmental, social, and governance factors), ostensibly by focusing their businesses on these concerns as well as on profits.
The narrative that Social Security eats up government revenue, driving the federal debt upward, is deeply entrenched in the Republican Party’s psyche. Former-Vice President Mike Pence insinuated such February during a private meeting with business leaders when promoting the age-old Republican wish to privatize Social Security. So maybe Social Security won’t be off the table, as GOP leaders earlier promised, as the current debate over the debt ceiling unfolds.
Bernie Sanders and Bill Gates don’t agree on many things, but they both want to see a “robot tax,” a special levy on companies that replace workers with machines. Sanders and Gates may be well-intentioned with this call for a robot tax.

The New Deal was born exactly 90 years ago, on FDR’s Inauguration Day, March 4, 1933. In his inaugural speech (the one famous for saying Americans had “nothing to fear but fear itself”), he acknowledged the many crises facing the country and observed, “This Nation is asking for action, and action now.”
Nearly two dozen Democratic lawmakers from the U.S. Senate and House—as well as independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont—have written to President Joe Biden imploring him to put the last nail in the coffin of an "ill-conceived and misguided" oil and gas drilling project in Alaska that experts say would destroy the president's climate legacy if approved in any form.
More than halfway through his term, US president Joe Biden has yet to use his veto power. But that could change after the US Senate voted this week to block a US Labor Department rule that would have allowed retirement plans to consider environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors in their investments.

He was poisoned with nerve agent Novichok in 2020, an attack several Western officials and Navalny himself openly blamed on the Kremlin. Russia has denied any involvement.

You may not have seen the news or you may have forgotten all about it by now. Last month, Denver City Councilman and candidate for re-election Chris Hinds was forced to crawl up onto the stage for a scheduled debate or forfeit the matching election funds from the city. The story drew attention not only locally but throughout the country and even globally. Councilman Hinds has used a wheelchair since 2008 when an accident left him paralyzed from the chest down.

In June 2020, after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that workplace discrimination against people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity was illegal, Alaska quickly moved to follow suit.
It published new guidelines in 2021 saying Alaska’s LGBTQ protections now extended beyond the workplace to housing, government practices, finance and “public accommodation.” It updated the website of the Alaska State Commission for Human Rights to explicitly say it was illegal to discriminate against someone because of that person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.
When asked what they would do if mandated to return to the office, 21% of respondents said they would quit, while 49% said that they will look for other remote work opportunities while continuing to work at their current company. Bill C-11, also known as the Online Streaming Act, creates a framework to regulate digital streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+ and Spotify, and would require them to contribute to the creation and promotion of Canadian content. The bill passed its third reading in the Senate last month with 26 amendments. It will be up to the House of Commons to decide which of those changes to keep before passing the bill into law.

Internet provider Grande Communications has asked a Texas federal court to overrule a jury verdict that awarded $47 million in piracy damages to several record labels. If that's not an option, the ISP would like to have a new trial. In the event that both options are off the table, Grande plans to appeal the piracy liability case.

I actually drink and like both tea and coffee--pu erh, greens, oolongs, a really nice "King of the Blue Mountain" from Taiwan the lady out front asked some grumpy man in the back whether she could sell it. I do reuse the tea leaves, though not to the extent of drying them out in the sun like Japanese farmers did, or probably some still do. A major problem with that is the general lack of sun in the Pacific Northwest.
Bonus points to lojban for getting both "cha" and "tea" into tcati.
As a regular drinker of both coffee and tea, I am compelled to present a contrasting view.
The thing is, there are fundamental differences in people's tastes both physiologically and mentally. There are supertasters who can discern small nuances and may be overwhelmed by some flavors, and people have a multitude of positive and negative memories and emotional associations related to food and drinks.
i recently (maybe a month ago) left instagram. i found myself feeling as if i had to use it, which felt unhealthy. now i am finding ways to fill my time.
i don’t care much about the concept of being productive. not in a material way. what i do find of interest is keeping my mind productive. the hours and days i spent filling up my boredom with scrolling instagram, checking my friends stories obsessively, those feelings of missing out, are now void.
I’ve tried this system twice, although only one of those two attempts were really serious, and I couldn’t get it to work.
Now, I like that it leverages having a working GTD system, which I have, and it does set out to solve a problem I perceive myself having (doing slightly fewer long-term and slightly more short-term projects than I tell myself I’d like), and maybe the solution is to try it again and maybe it’ll stick the third time.
My bachelor thesis is now almost finished, I just will need to hold one presentation about it next week. This is why I thought about analyzing the usage of my Zettelkasten (still not sure if I am doing it right to really call it a Zettelkasten, but I'm just going to call it like that) after the bachelor thesis.
(If you don't care about the actual analysis, I would still recommend reading the conclusion and recommended reads if you are somewhat interested in note-taking in general.)
