What's Left of the Mainstream Media After the Olympics
Junk from IDG.
THE Olympic noise [1, 2] may be over, but the media has not come back. This is what we're seeing today in 'the news':
Sadly, over time this is becoming even more prevalent. IDG has just done this in a sister site, following the likes of ZDNet and CNET. News sites on the Web are basically dying, only to be taken up by marketing companies that try to "monetise" what's left.
In the example above, "both sponsored 'articles' [show] the list price," an associate explains, "but not TCO, of a roach motel for your data further reduced yet again to prevent people learning about Calligra or LibreOffice and so that they'll throw good money after bad (aka Sunk Cost Fallacy)."
Microsoft is wasting money on this type of advertising, but at the same time this waste of money kills what's left of media online. █
