Simple is Better, Simplicity is Power

Bigger is not always more valuable

Wrongthink.link has a new "all-you-need-is-ssh" post, which neatly relates to what I recently said about working while away from home. With X forwarding it's really very simple, and unlike VNC/RDP (and similar things) it is fast and efficient.

Wrongthink.link shows a large number or a side range of use cases. It concludes with: "SSH was practically built for this. I feel this hardly needs explaining. Webmin panels aren’t needed and they serve to expose yet another service for bots to pry at. Use top for system monitoring. Take a look at nethogs for bandwidth monitoring. nnn for directory navigation. Local mail and log monitoring. It’s all right there, accessible through the terminal."

But there are always ways to do file sharing, pass around user interfaces, even play videos remotely or browsing remotely (the latter relies less on high throughput). I've done it all since I was a teenager.

That is "the advantage of having commodity GNU/Linux systems," an associate notes. And OpenSSH also makes it simple to interact with the BSDs. Of course Wayland is a step back in that regard. It misses some of the X functionality that makes SSH more attractive and has made it very powerful since the 1990s.
