Mental Problems in Free Software
The SFC's Bradley M. Kühn has just opened up about his brother murdering their mom - a subject he dreaded would come up after Eben Moglen had sued SFC for being an opportunistic imposter of Moglen's SFLC (he also dreaded Moglen bring up that he was attracted to men, so he publicised this proactively). Like other SFC associates, there's disconnection from one's family. On the same day GNOME's Hari Rana opened up about personal difficulties. Quite a few GNOME associates have had issues lately; one was arrested for strangling women.
I recently discussed with a prominent developer the situation in Debian and elsewhere; the core question was, does a project like Debian attract suicidal people or does it turn sane and stable people into suicidal persons? Similarly, does Free software attract weirdos and misfits? Nobody seems to be interested in this topic or, at the very least, nobody wants to talk about it; instead, there are efforts to suppress discussion about it.
A stable community needs stable people, it needs grown-ups. When people bring their personal trauma into a project it tends not to end well. █
