And as the Year Turns...
5 days from now it's the year's last day. Then the reckless kids blow up some crackers, the television broadcasts stupid laser shows (waste of taxpayers' money) or things blowing up in the sky to signal "wealth" (through waste/spendings) to the world. A few days later people return to the jobs they hate. Rinse, repeat, etc.
The significance of new years isn't based on geology or astronomy or anything like that. Years aren't even 365 days-long (that's why we have leap years). Solstice would likely make more sense for new years, not ~10 days after solstice.
However, as a human construct, new years are times to make changes (or promises/resolutions to oneself).
In our case, we sort of pledge to write more in the sister site, where we published close to a thousand original articles this year. That site focuses a lot more on GNU/Linux and is generally less opinionated (different audience since 2004).
Aside from that, not much will change. Our current publication style has served us well this year and I've slept a lot this year, resulting in fewer typos.
Solstice is already "old", but new year's day is still ahead of us, so people can decide to make positive changes. National media in France has just pointed out that many people make fitness-related promises to themselves and recently began running. Being both healthy and affordable, it's a good habit/hobby to adopt. █
