2023 in Review (From a Software Freedom Perspective)
2024 is here soon...
THE year will end soon, marking the finish line of a difficult year (for most people).
So much has happened this past year. GNU turned 40, its founder publicly revealed that he has cancer, the EPO and EU started an illegal and unconstitutional kangaroo court for European software patents, and GNU/Linux grew a lot - continuing a multi-year streak. Microsoft meanwhile laid off tens of thousands of workers, the United States took 2.5 trillion dollars in additional debt in just 6 months (to bail out corporations after several American banks were collapsing), and IBM tried to kill RHEL clones. Google ramped up its attacks on Free software while pushing WEI and it googlebombed "Gemini" [1, 2, 3, 4], which continued to grow, whereas the Web shrank and many news sites went offline.
What will 2024 bring? More of the same? █
