University of Michigan ☛ The Teenage B-Side
Picture this: It’s 2014. You come home from school crying because no one understands you. You run to your bedroom, slam the door, lie down on your American Apparel grid-patterned sheets and open your Acer laptop. You browse Tumblr for a while, reblogging a picture of boxed water.

Hackaday ☛ The Tiny Toolkit Manifesto
Most of us have some form of an on-the-go toolkit, but how much thought have we put into its contents? \there’s a community of people who put a lot of thought into this, and EMF Camp have put up one of their talks from earlier in the summer in which [Drew Batchelor] sets out their manifesto and introduces tinytoolk.it, a fascinating resource.

Hackaday ☛ Hackaday Links: September 22, 2024
Thanks a lot, Elon. Or maybe not, depending on how this report that China used Starlink signals to detect low-observable targets pans out. There aren’t a lot of details, and we couldn’t find anything approximating a primary source, but it seems like the idea is based on forward scatter, which is when waves striking an object are deflected only a little bit. The test setup for this experiment was a ground-based receiver listening to the downlink signal from a Starlink satellite while a DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone was flown into the signal path. The drone was chosen because nobody had a spare F-22 or F-35 lying around, and its radar cross-section is about that of one of these stealth fighters. They claim that this passive detection method was able to make out details about the drone, but as with most reporting these days, this needs to be taken with an ample pinch of salt. Still, it’s an interesting development that may change things up in the stealth superiority field.

Whether you’re a landlubber or an old salt, you’ve got to appreciate the effort that [The Aussie boat guy] puts into cutting an old brass propeller down into a far smaller and sleeker specimen. After so many layoffs, what’s even left of the games industry?
It’s hard to look back on 2023’s year in gaming. On the one hand, the year became a beacon of hope for quality games, with releases like Alan Wake 2, Tears of the Kingdom, Dave the Diver, and the record-breaking Baldur’s Gate 3. Yet, on the other hand, the year’s releases became intensely overshadowed by the industry’s sudden downfall as signified by seemingly constant layoffs, with more than 11,000 jobs being cut by the year’s end.
We all hoped that the end of the year would mark the end to these layoffs. There’s been no lack of excellent releases this year (Team Asobi’s Astro Bot most recently being subject to near-universal acclaim) – and yet, by June 2024 there were already more layoffs in 2024 than the entirety of 2023. Even more have just been announced; after cutting more than 1,900 jobs in January, Microsoft have recently announced that another 650 will be laid off.

Dennis Crouch/Patently-O ☛ Justice is Not Silent: The Case Against One-Word Affirmances in the Federal Circuit
Courts of Appeal are both courts of review and subject to review. As courts of review, they have demanded of the lower courts that they provide sufficient reasoning and rationale to enable the parties and reviewing courts to understand the bases of their decisions. As courts subject to review, the US Supreme Court has demanded that Courts of Appeal provide sufficient information and explanation of their judgments so the Justices can, in turn, provide their review.
Federal Rule of Appellate Procedure Rule 36 allows for courts to issue judgments without opinions. Each of the Circuit Courts has their own rules and practices associated with the issuance of such opinions. The majority—including the First, Second, Third, Fourth, Sixth, Seventh, Ninth, Eleventh, and DC Circuits—do not have a local rule allowing simple one-word affirmances, while the minority—including the Fifth, Eighth, Tenth, and Federal Circuits—do.
