IBM Layoffs in the United Kingdom (UK) in 2025

posted by Roy Schestowitz on Mar 25, 2025

Yesterday: IBM (and Red Hat) on a Fast Train to Nowhere | Press Reports Say Almost 10,000 Western IBMers Laid Off

Hours ago:

In past years, the US gets hit first, and then in the week or two after, the rest of the world gets hit.

Threads like the one above are more than we can count; we saw all sorts of countries being mentioned for IBM layoffs this month. It does not look like any country is spared, some say not even India (people claim IBM also laid off there). Of course thousands got laid off in China, even very recently (almost 2,000 workers).

Since IBM refuses to be transparent, and it's not a new issue by the way, almost nobody can keep a tally. All one can say is, IBM is losing government contracts and removes loads of stuff to "puff up" the stock, even if that means no actual future for the company. Then it floats bogus figures, including "headcount". Anyone who protests what's happening is presumed racist.

A lot of the numbers we see and hear can only ever qualify as "Gossip" or "Hearsay" because IBM almost always refuses to comment.

Should Free software people trust such a secretive company? Can they?
