Earlier today in Daily Links we included this news article about banks passing jobs to India, quoting:
But "this was an outright lie," fired workers told FSU. Instead, call volumes had been increasing at the time they were dismissed, with CBA supposedly "scrambling"—offering staff overtime and redirecting management to join workers answering phones to keep up.To uncover the truth, FSU escalated the dispute to a fair work tribunal, where the union accused CBA of failing to explain how workers' roles were ruled redundant. The union also alleged that CBA was hiring for similar roles in India, Bloomberg noted, which made it appear that CBA had perhaps used the chatbot to cover up a shady pivot to outsource jobs.
So far this month (one week remaining) we saw at least two waves of layoffs at Microsoft. Those are not part of the prior two waves, which were massive.
Meanwhile consider thelayoff.com.
"American students spend $250K or more for a college education and then they get replaced by H1Bs: what a cool system!" someone wrote 4 hours ago about Microsoft. "In addition cheaper H1Bs help transitioning job outsourcing more easily to India using native language during countless hours without complaint and resilience; at the risk of deportation if they don’t outperform."
People there habitually point out that Microsoft's main campus (in Washington) is in fact very Indian and has therefore earned nicknames to that effect. Microsoft is trying to distract from any debate about this.
That's not to say that the mass layoffs are in fact substitutions. Weeks ago Microsoft made it very clear that it wants many people to resign. Paying salaries has become difficult because the cash cows died. █
