Bonum Certa Men Certa

The Lies and Delusions of António Campinos

Summary: Monopolies and American corporations (and their lawyers) are a priority for today's EPO, Europe's second-largest institution

THE "striking" video above is worth sharing, but a lot of commentary needs to accompany it (partly for legal reasons).

The EPO is meant to be about Europe, but a lot of the biggest applicants are in fact American and Monopoly Tony is bragging about it to American patent lobbyists. The above talk, which is annotated verbally (Fair Use) shows that Monopoly Tony cannot stick to concision (a form of rudeness) when speaking to American patent lobbyists (who notoriously push for software patents). He moves his hands all over the place while speaking of "harmonisation" and spreading a bunch of lies, even gloating about changing the law to suit his agenda!

"Is this the best Europe has to offer?"What's quite illuminating here isn't the poor communication skills (Benoît Battistelli was even worse) but advocacy of software patents -- using all the typical buzzwords -- culminating in evangelising "legal hacks" to circumvent laws and constitutions. Maybe the talk was so poor because it had been made for this audience, but still...

Is this the best Europe has to offer? Jet-lagged, drunk, or both?

Encoding notes/errata: At risk of distraction, the video is a tad jumpy at times. That's just because the hardware is very weak and needs to assemble 3 video streams in tandem, in real time. It is a longstanding issue. Over time we might find a solution to this. The numbers shown on the right aren't important; those are Gemini statistics since midnight. Only top requesters (like spiders) are shown.
