Novell News Summary - Part I: OpenSUSE 11.2 Milestone 2, Conference Coming, Ambassadors Sought

Anole lizard

Summary: Substantial OpenSUSE news from the past 7 days

THE MAIN news about OpenSUSE this week would probably be this release of the 2nd milestone of OpenSUSE 11.2, which Joe Brockmeier announced just 2 days ago..

The openSUSE Project is happy to announce the second milestone release for openSUSE 11.2 is ready for download. This release includes Firefox 3.5 beta 4, KDE 4.3 beta 1, GNOME 2.26, and hundreds of other updates from Milestone 1.

OpenSUSE gets rejected by one person who deletes it in order to give room to Ubuntu.

Enter Ubuntu. The last time I ran Linux, I had ran Ubuntu. While I can’t remember the exact version, I’m pretty sure it was at the most 7.04. Back then, wireless connectivity wasn’t perfect either (better than most other distros though). But having read that the latest Ubuntu (9.04, Jaunty Jackalope) was getting rave reviews, I decided to burn off a live CD to see what happens. Behold, the second it booted into the live CD environment, and I saw the list of wireless networks, I knew this was how it should be. Bye, bye OpenSUSE.

Here is a new comic of SUSE fighting Ubuntu. It sure brings back memories.

On the other hand, OpenSUSE Factory gets praised and here is something about OWL.

I installed openSUSE Factory with the GNOME pattern in a virtual machine today. Here’s a screeny (If you can’t click on it to show properly, try this link);

Moblin becomes Goblin and there is a lot of coverage about OpenSUSE's new relationship with Moblin. It's rather repetitive by now.

I can finally release my super secret project to you the lovely community: Project Goblin. You may well be asking "WTF is Goblin?!" and the answer is pretty simple really - our illustrious mascot Geeko + Moblin = Goblin

The OpenSUSE Web site contains some more news including this announcement of an upcoming OpenSUSE Conference (2009).

The program committee has extended the deadline for participation in the openSUSE Conference 2009. Find the updated Call for Papers document at http://en.opensuse.org/OpenSUSE_Conf_2009/Call_for_Papers. This gives you nearly two more weeks to come up with a proposal for a talk, a panel discussion or a birds of a feather (BOF) session.

While some members of the OpenSUSE community are leaving, OpenSUSE "ambassadors" are sought.

Want to help spread the word about the openSUSE Project and encourage more people to become part of the openSUSE Community? Are you ready to roll up your sleeves and spread the word about the openSUSE Project? Do you want to teach new users about Linux, speak about openSUSE at local events, help distribute openSUSE media, and mentor new contributors to the openSUSE Project? Then you’re ready to become an openSUSE Ambassador!

Next up: SLED and SLES.
