This was my first time attending FOSDEM and I had a lot of fun! It truly lived up to my expectations of full corridors, lots of known faces, and Delirium.
During the conference days I was around the GNOME booth where interactions were great! Lots of people passing by and sharing kind words of appreciation to our desktop. We had lots of interest in GUADEC and LAS, as well as many people curious about the state of GNOME on mobile. The t-shirt/hoodie sales were a huge success! We were pretty much sold out by Sunday morning.
Special thanks to Kristi, Caroline, Rosanna, Sonny, David, Regina, Martin, Anisa, Rob, Zeeshan, and everyone that helped in the booth (I’m probably missing here people that were at the booth when I was elsewhere). Also, shoutout to the GNOME corridor gang!

I recently got a new NVME drive. My plan was to create a fresh Debian install on anF2FSroot partition with compression for maximum performance. As it turns out, this is not entirely trivil to accomplish. For one, the Debian installer does not support F2FS (here is my attempt to add it from 2021). And even if it did, grub does not support F2FS with the
extra_attr
flagthat is required for compression support (at least as of grub 2.06).Luckily, we can install Debian anyway with all these these shiny new features when we go the manual road with
debootstrap
and usingsystemd-boot
as bootloader.
The server that normally serves this page, all my email, and many more services was unavailable for about 24 hours. This post explains how and why.
What happened?
Starting February 2nd, I started seeing intermittent packet loss on the network. Every hour or so, the link would go down for one or two minutes, then come back up.
At first, I didn't think much of it because I was away and could blame the crappy wifi or the uplink I using. But when I came in the office on Monday, the service was indeed seriously degraded. I could barely do videoconferencing calls as they would cut out after about half an hour.
The new Ubuntu kernel updates are available only for long-term supported Ubuntu systems, including Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish), Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa), and Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver).
These Ubuntu kernel updates are here to patch up to 19 vulnerabilities, including CVE-2022-41849 and CVE-2022-41850, two race conditions discovered in the Roccat HID and SMSC UFX USB drivers that could lead to use-after-free vulnerabilities. These affect all Ubuntu LTS systems mentioned above and could allow local and physically proximate attackers to cause a denial of service (system crash) or execute arbitrary code.
Back in 2016, when I searched for the world's cheapest MCU, I found Holtek HT48R002 8-bit microcontroller, and a few years later (2019), Padauk PMS150C “3 Cents” MCU came to my attention. However, both are 8-bit microcontrollers that come with OTG (One-Time Programming) ROM, meaning they can't be easily used for development or updated.
Parts of the fediverse have been in something of an uproar recently over an experimental search service that was under development called (appropriately enough) Searchtodon. The project aimed to enable people to search their own home timeline and worked by being authorized by a user to access that user’s timeline via the ActivityPub API and downloading a copy of each post that is visible to that user. The service then indexed the posts and gave the user tools to search through the history of their own timeline.

A while ago, I blogged about how zink was leveraging
VK_EXT_graphics_pipeline_library
to avoid mid-frame shader compilation, AKA hitching. This was all good and accurate in that the code existed, it worked, and when the right paths were taken, there was no mid-frame shader compiling. The problem, of course, is that these paths were never taken. Who could have guessed: there were bugs.
These bugs are now fixed, however, and so there should beno more mid-frame hitching ever with zink.
Period.

Ethical hacking is a proactive approach using the same techniques like the same programming languages as malicious hacking. Ethical hackers must stay current on IT security as well as the latest methods and programming languages used by attackers. Three of the best programming languages for Ethical Hacking are PHP, Python, and SQL.
Programming languages are sets of instructions that instruct a computer to perform specific tasks. However, there are over 300 programming languages and many categories overlap. The C programming language is the most ancient of a group of languages that are distinct but overlap. Ethical hackers must have a thorough understanding of programming languages in order to analyse and modify code. Programming languages can also be used to automate time-consuming tasks and detect errors in software. Finally, the top programming languages for ethical hacking are determined by the computer systems and platforms under consideration.
The programming languages used by cyber criminals are the best for ethical hacking. Here are ten hacking languages to learn, ranging from Bash to JavaScript and SQL.

I was given a Thumby for Christmas. It's a ridiculously small gameboy-style console. It's so small that it's hard to believe it works.
