Bonum Certa Men Certa

3 More Months Till Maturity (18)

posted by Roy Schestowitz on Aug 05, 2024

The sun sets as mountains are enveloped in a fog

3 months are left before we turn 18 (or the Microsoft-Novell deal turns 18). This site was always pro bono, meaning that it existed not to make money but only to serve a good cause (even at great personal expense). The same is true for the sister site, which turned 20 just 2 months ago.

The vision we've long had for both "sites" was Gemini capsules. In 2022 we developed a system that lets us author Gemini pages with greater ease (not merely conversions of stuff from a CMS) and nowadays - especially now that we have a local host with better connectivity than the average home - our uptime is nearly perfect and thus both capsules are ranked highly for availability.

In Europe it can take a tenth of a second to load a page (0.169 seconds from Germany, 0.1 seconds from London), owing to the fact everything is static and the host is well-wired. Speed is very important, but another really important factor is being robust to angry hyenas who do illegal things in an effort to interfere with the hosting, the publication etc. Having dealt with nonsense like this for nearly 20 years (it first happened in 2005 when I was a postgraduate student), I know how to handle it and we're handling it just fine.

Two lions standing in dry yellow environment, one of them is on the log

Lions almost always beat hyenas. Bear this in mind when approaching.

This coming week we don't plan to go on holiday, so publication pace will be better than last week's.

We don't plan any parties (or anything like that) for the 18th anniversary because 18 isn't a "special" number like 20. We'll definitely do something special for 20.
