Almost Every Day This Month the GNU/Linux "Market Share" Grows in statCounter
HAVING just checked (again) this page, we see further increases (compared to yesterday) in the estimate of GNU/Linux share. Yesterday it was already a lot higher than the prior week and also higher than early in the month (at the start of the month it was about 0.2% lower).
statCounter is not a gold(en) standard or a great yardstick in general, but that's what we have other than smaller surveys like Steam and W3Schools, which sees GNU/Linux at around 4.0%, i.e. roughly the same as statCounter.
Does all this matter at all?
Yes, it does!
For one thing, it has already helped us eliminate ruinous myths and FUD, such as "nobody uses Linux!" or "only few specialists or geeks are able to install the darn thing!"
We'll continue to track and report on these numbers. It's a crucial element of Free software advocacy. Advocates like to see progress. It's fueling enthusiasm. █
