Summary: Rusty joins Tim and Roy for a show about issues of the day/week

Rusty is back for another splendid show which suffered a few sound issues in the first segment. We start the show with wonderful news about Tim’s newly-born daughter and then talk about Steve Jobs’ death as well as Richard Stallman’s reaction to it. We then speak about Apple’s anti-Android strategy and take stock of Android’s success, noting that Microsoft’s patent trolls at Intellectual Ventures launched recently a lawsuit against Motorola — an issue that antitrust regulators turn a blind eye to. “100 mph (in 2nd Gear)” by Gemma Ray gets played followed by a discussion about Ubuntu 11.10, Unity experiences, and PCLinuxOS 2011.6, which introduced Tim to KDE in a much better way. “Everyone’s Got ‘Em” by White Ghost Shivers is then played and we begin a segment about KDE and tablets, later to mention India’s low-cost tablet, Microsoft in tablets, and the general shift in form factors. “Government Name (Spontaneous Lover)” by Rockwell Knuckles is then played, ending with a discussion about social networks such as Diaspora and Google+. The whole show closes with the song “El Rogadero” by Banda de Turistas.

Summary:The latest episode which covers Nokia, Google, Diaspora, and much more

THIS latest episode was recorded around noon for a change. It was arranged at short notice with time constraints and Roy being very slightly ill (speech/voice problems). But nonetheless we covered the news of the day/week by speaking about Nokia’s return to Linux in low-end phones, Chrome being flagged as a “virus” by Microsoft, then playing “Reality Check” by One Be Lo. We spoke about Microsoft’s latest patent ‘deal’ with Samsung and mentioned Amazon’s tablet among other tablets, as well as their general role in today’s computing scene. “Quejas de un Bandoneonista” by Zona Tango was then played, we spoke about Diaspora and other social networks and finally we closed the show with “A secret search” by Papercutz. Update: Tim has his page up as well.

We talk about moving to/from GNOME 3 and Unity, noting Roy’s prior experience with Mandriva. “The Way It Is” by Kristyna Myles is then played and later begins a discussion about Mageia’s GUI and installer, the 1-year anniversary, and Identi.ca group (including something about polls). “Impossibly Beautiful” by Julie Feeney is played and then comes a long discussion about PCLinuxOS, Mandrake, Gaël Duval (and Ulteo), UnityLinux, etc. “I am” by Jones Family Singers closes this long show.

TechBytes Episode 60: Microsoft Versus Dual Booters, Google Competition Matters, and Google+

Posted in TechBytes at 9:32 pm by Dr. Roy Schestowitz

TechBytes

Direct download as Ogg (1:44:12, 22.2 MB) | High-quality MP3 (39.6 MB) | Low-quality MP3 (11.9 MB)

Summary: Tim, Roy, and Rusty meet to speak about new subjects, as well as debate general important issues like patent systems and privacy

We start today’s show by discussing Linux/dual-boot systems being hampered by Microsoft’s plans. We talk about other GNU/Linux matters and then play “Lagrimas e vodka” by Sylvia Patricia. Red Hat’s results are then discussed with some enthusiasm and Tim mentions that Statusnet reached version 1.0beta4. “Pajama Party” by Swimming With Dolphins is then played and we mention the patent ‘reform’ among other issues relating to patents, even the Samsung/Android situation. “Go’n Be Gone” by LidoLido is played and then we cover Google antitrust (Google under the US government’s eye) as well as the failure of Windows Phone 7 in competing against Android (sign of things to come for Windows 8). Google+ opens to the public, so Rusty and Tim have a good debate about it, followed by almost no coverage (due to lack of time) of Yahoo and search snatch, as well as US-oriented statistics that deceive the public and make it seem like Microsoft has made real progress. We are hoping to have another episode this week.

TechBytes Episode 59: Privacy, Tablets, and Dream Studio

Posted in TechBytes at 4:45 am by Dr. Roy Schestowitz

TechBytes

Direct download as Ogg (1:45:28, 23.1 MB) | High-quality MP3 (37.7 MB) | Low-quality MP3 (12.1 MB)

Summary: Rusty is back for this latest fun show, which is only the second show ever that had the list of topics prepared before recording

LAST night’s show started not with Linux, for a change. We spoke about Google’s ever-reaching arm of control and why one should care, then we spoke about problems with Facebook and noted that ACS:LAW’s Andrew Crossley will face the SDT on January 16th (2012), having threatened people based on their IP addresses. Tim played “Endsequence” by Obsidian Shell and we then spoke about $199 Android tablets, right before moving on to the track “Deeper Conversation” by Yuna.

As Linux turns 20 it celebrates a win, but Kernel.org gets cracked as well. We speak about this briefly and then mention that the Microsoft-led Nokia is feeding a patent troll, MOSAID, to attack Microsoft rivals like Android. There is a class action lawsuit over Windows Phone 7 privacy, the iPad is losing market share to Linux/Android, and the Amazon Kindle tablet is coming before Christmas, expecting about 5 million sales. We talk about all of these subjects and then play “One More Workout Shawty” by DJ Car Stereo. We speak about how Wikileaks’ Cablegate reveals diplomats batting for Microsoft and defaming Linux, then we speak about Red Hat’s RHEL 7 ideas being crowdsourced as well as some other distributions like the new Dream Studio, Ubuntu’s approach with the release of a new beta, and more. The show closes with “Mi Compadre Bernabe” by Cerronato. Update: Tim’s show notes are now released.

TechBytes Episode 58: HP’s 180, Google’s New Patents, and the New GIMP

Posted in TechBytes at 4:48 am by Dr. Roy Schestowitz

TechBytes

Direct download as Ogg (1:52:35, 24.4 MB) | High-quality MP3 (38.6 MB) | Low-quality MP3 (12.9 MB)

Summary: After over 2 weeks since the last show (due to work commitments) we are back to catching up with news

TODAY we release last night’s show, which was the first one for which we roughly outlined subjects we would cover. Sadly, as we neglected to test the audio prior to recording, there is a massive problem with volume differences and a leveller could not compensate for it adequately. Update: detailed show notes are out.

We first discuss HP’s departure from PCs and also WebOS, which can live on elsewhere. The Motorola/Google deal is then dealt with, followed by the song “The One” by PJ Morton. We then start a discussion about the United States Court of Appeals opening the door to invalidating more software patents. We also talk about software patents in the EU and in general, then play “Can’t Stop” by Ozomatli. The Samsung/Apple situation in Europe is then talked about, including fake/’Photoshopped’ images from Apple (Apple’s fake evidence and reversal of a ban). GIMP 2.7.3 with Photoshop-like GUI option is then talked about, shortly before we go into plug-ins, programming (e.g. Java and Python), and a lot about social networks. “Thursday” by Orchid and Hound closes the show.

We hope you will join us for future shows and consider subscribing to the show via the RSS feed. You can also visit our archives for past shows. If you have an Identi.ca account, consider subscribing to TechBytes in order to keep up to date.
