Urgent Call: Stop Mono(vell) People from Putting Moonlight in Ubuntu
The Microsoft patent trap is being pushed into the next Ubuntu:
<directhex> it’s official, moon binaries are now trivially installable on any ubuntu 9.04 system
<directhex> the 1-click url is apt:moonlight-plugin-mozilla
It’s Jo Shield again, pushing Microsoft technologies into Ubuntu having done the same with Mono. Fedora forbade Moonlight because the SFLC had confirmed that it's a problem. Please support a coalition to oppose this (work in progress).

Ok. What specifically can Ubuntu users do?
Novell and MS appear to have people sitting around full-time to squash bug reports and stifle comments. How do we go about supporting a coalition to oppose the poisoning of Ubuntu?
It’s already bad enough that space is wasted on the installation CD, space that could be used for useful applications instead.

Needs Sunlight, perhaps it’s up to you and me to come up with a plan. I’m going to be unavailable until 1:30 Eastern Standard Time in the United States. Perhaps, we could brainstorm something then. We clearly need to get the information out to the Ubuntu forums, but are there other useful things to do? I have a junk email address at lesotho666 at yahoo.fr.
For the record, I’m using Kubuntu 9.04 right now.

As long as it doesn’t get into the default… Also, it is never explained whether this package will include Novell’s cute addons like windows media codecs that come with moonlight? I guess not, if it is in the repos, if it does then it is time to complaint.

They could put Moonlight without the codecs in place (preinstalled) and then offer an option to get codecs just as they do with MP3. That’s the long-term concern.

Everything ends up in Universe, as it probably should – it’s community maintained and pretty easy to get a package into. Has to be free software in terms of copyright, and Moonlight is – possibly patent encumbered stuff (another example is anything with an MP3 codec) ends up there too.
It would be severely problematic if it ended up in Main, as Mono has.
