Is Microsoft Embracing Open Source? Like a Python Embraces a Gazelle

“Open source is an intellectual-property destroyer [...] I can’t imagine something that could be worse than this for the software business and the intellectual-property business. I’m an American; I believe in the American way, I worry if the government encourages open source, and I don’t think we’ve done enough education of policymakers to understand the threat.”

Jim Allchin, President of Platforms & Services Division at Microsoft

A lot of gullible journalists (e.g. this one) are falling for Microsoft’s latest PR move called “Oxite”, which is an attempt to grab control of open source using its own Web sites, its own proprietary stack, and its own software licences. We wrote about this Microsoft strategy many times before (links at the bottom), so here is just a recent video from a short-sighted, yet intelligent, individual. He explains EEE, which stands for embrace, extend, and extinguish.

Oxite n. 1. an oxygen depriving excitement. 2. an echo chamber that doubles as a place of asphyxiation by induced euphoria in a confined space. 3. a toxic crowd controll agent. 4. a padded cell for lunatics (obsolete and offensive) example of use:

Internal Microsoft documents show that Gates was at the centre of a deliberate move to “cut off the oxygen supply” to Netscape. This failed so oxite was invented.

Oxite use has been banned by the treaty of Boston as a cruel and unpredictable weapon of mass destruction.

Difficult to see how Microsoft could “Embrace, extend, extinguish” their own product – that’s like cutting your nose off to spite your face.

I’ve taken a look at Oxite. There are licensing problems (a folder marked bin/ containing assemblies of indeterminate origin and license, possibly taken from blog examples)

AlexH, not EEEing a product here but a mode of development (that’s how they want the world to see it).

He’s not bought. He’s playing attention games again. Like “sad state of open source” and a migration to BSD…

@Roy: I’m not really sure what the mode of development has to do with anything, since they’re basically developing this in private?

@cosplayfan: at least Beranger’s tripe is off the menu here, for now at least.

sockpuppet n. 1. A a puppet made from a sock (or similar garment) which is placed over the hand of a puppeteer. 2. An online identity used for purposes of deception within an online community. I found one rather disturbing photo of a Python with a pregnant sheep in it. I wouldn’t want to see innocent gnus harmed.

  1. Financial Giants Will Attempt to Dominate or Control Bitcoin, Blockchain and Other Disruptive Free Software Using Software Patents

Free/Open Source software in the currency and trading world promised to emancipate us from the yoke of banking conglomerates, but a gold rush for software patents threatens to jeopardise any meaningful change or progress

  2. New Article From Heise Explains Erosion of Patent Quality at the European Patent Office (EPO)

To nobody's surprise, the past half a decade saw accelerating demise in quality of European Patents (EPs) and it is the fault of Battistelli's notorious policies

  3. Insensitivity at the EPO’s Management – Part V: Suspension of Salary and Unfair Trials

One of the lesser-publicised cases of EPO witch-hunting, wherein a member of staff is denied a salary "without any notification"

  7. 365 Days Later, German Justice Minister Heiko Maas Remains Silent and Thus Complicit in EPO Abuses on German Soil

The utter lack of participation, involvement or even intervention by German authorities serve to confirm that the government of Germany is very much complicit in the EPO's abuses, by refusing to do anything to stop them

  8. Battistelli's Idea of 'Independent' 'External' 'Social' 'Study' is Something to BUY From Notorious Firm PwC

The sham which is the so-called 'social' 'study' as explained by the Central Staff Committee last year, well before the results came out

  9. Europe Should Listen to SMEs Regarding the UPC, as Battistelli, Team UPC and the Select Committee Lie About It

Another example of UPC promotion from within the EPO (a committee dedicated to UPC promotion), in spite of everything we know about opposition to the UPC from small businesses (not the imaginary ones which Team UPC claims to speak 'on behalf' of)

  10. Video: French State Secretary for Digital Economy Speaks Out Against Benoît Battistelli at Battistelli's PR Event

Uploaded by SUEPO earlier today was the above video, which shows how last year's party (actually 2015) was spoiled for Battistelli by the French State Secretary for Digital Economy, Axelle Lemaire, echoing the French government's concern about union busting etc. at the EPO (only to be rudely censored by Battistelli's 'media partner')

In violation of international labour laws, Team Battistelli marches on and engages in a union-busting race against the clock, relying on immunity to keep this gravy train rolling before an inevitable crash

  13. FFPE-EPO is a Zombie (if Not Dead) Yellow Union Whose Only de Facto Purpose Has Been Attacking the EPO's Staff Union

A new year's reminder that the EPO has only one legitimate union, the Staff Union of the EPO (SUEPO), whereas FFPE-EPO serves virtually no purpose other than to attack SUEPO, more so after signing a deal with the devil (Battistelli)

  14. EPO Select Committee is Wrong About the Unitary Patent (UPC)

The UPC is neither desirable nor practical, especially now that the EPO lowers patent quality; but does the Select Committee understand that?
