No Mono in Fedora 10 (“Cambridge”) Live CD

Posted in GNOME, Mono, Novell, Red Hat at 4:48 pm by Dr. Roy Schestowitz

Mono was spotted in Fedora 8, but we noticed it was absent from the Fedora 9 Live CD. It happened around the time that Fedora said no to Moonlight, which itself depends on Mono. We can now confirm that the same goes for the current build of Fedora 10. A reader of ours, ‘neighborlee’, has sent us the following screenshots as proof.

Here you can see that Tomboy is not installed. Its icon is nowhere in sight.

GNOME Fedora Desktop

Another example of abstinence:

GNOME Fedora Menu

Validation of the claim that Mono is excluded:

GNOME Fedora Install

Good news overall.

Fedora seems to have mitigated its dependency on Novell's (and Microsoft's) potential trap.

Is that the default look? So nice, with it and no Mono I might switch to Fedora.

Sadly, there is a difference between “No Mono on the Live CD” and “No Mono in the installed distro”

Mono is still included in the default install of Fedora w/ GNOME

I have been using Ubuntu up until now, but this is really good. I will look at switching over the weekend also.

Umm, No. The live cd is the installer that is recommended by Fedora for desktop users.

Hope to see mono wiped off from their repositories too… :-D

it is ok to have it in repos. Bad to have it necessary for default.

I just found this in groklaw: http://www.groklaw.net/comment.php?mode=display&sid=20080805144125413&title=How+to+remove+Mono+(M%24)+from+Ubuntu+Hardy+Heron&type=article&order=&hideanonymous=0&pid=716633#c716651

Is this true? And why does it happen? Why would ooO require libmono in PCLinuxOS? Are they using go-ooo? That would suck, PCLinuxOS is kind of over hyped and it would suck if such a popular distro supported Novell’s ill intentions like that.

Excellent find. Thanks, Victor. It’s not very surprising.

you people really suck. R U stoopid? it’s obvious this is only a mistake in PCLinuxOS’s package management. go-oo is used in Ubuntu, too.

While i actually like mono i agree that it should be removed from Fedora and CentOS. I would prefer to install mono from its own repositories, that worked a lot better. Mono is progressing rapidly and its one of the few components where i actually wanna be at the edge.

Could someone advise if Mono is installed in Linpus Linux Lite which is pre-installed in the Acer Aspire One Mini? TIA
